Rant || Villains are VILLAINS
Game Introduction
How To Play
[Trigger Warning: Mentions of some serious topics] I really do feel like I’ve made this exact rant before. And if I have, then I am sorry for sounding like a broken record. But this is something that’s been bothering me for a little while now Why are people suddenly getting upset when the villains in stories do bad things? Like, that’s the whole point. They are the “bad guys.” The purpose of a villain in terms of the story is to do horrible things, so the audience is taught that their actions are not acceptable. And that doesn’t stop at robbing banks for kidnapping a princess. Serious stories handle serious topics, and as such, villains do more serious things. Murder, abuse, and the like. The story is still doing the same thing, demonstrating how and why these things are horrible. But for some reason, some people act there’s a problem with it. There are two examples I want to highlight. The first is the High Evolutionary in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Horrible person. Mistreats and experiments on animals. And kills some of said animals at one point in the film. And the movie depicts it as it is: something extremely horrible. It’s telling the audience to not root for this person or this behavior. There is nothing wrong with that. If those topics are triggering to you, that is alright. Just don’t watch the movie again. But don’t act like the movie is wrong for trying to depict a serious topic and the consequences of it. The other example is Thistleclaw from Warriors, specifically in Spottedleaf’s Heart. In this book, Thistle has romantic interest in Spottedpaw while she is an apprentice as he is a warrior. Hopefully I don’t need explain why the is disgusting and wrong. But it’s not like the book acts like it’s a good thing. Thistleclaw has already been characterized in his other appearances as a horrible person. It’s not as if the book acts like it’s alright for him to do this. Yes, Spottedpaw has interest as well, but this is an unfortunate scenario that can happen in real life as well. By showing this, the series shows its more mature and nuanced side, something that I love about the series. And in the end, Spottedleaf still realizes that Thistleclaw isn’t a good person, and turns her back on him. So the book still shows that none of his actions are justified or acceptable. If this part was not present, then it *would* be problematic for the book, as there would be nothing to give the audience the idea that Thistleclaw is wrong (aside from said previous characterization, but I’m referring to just this book) Again, if the topic in general is triggering to you, just don’t read Spottedleaf’s Heart. But don’t hate on it for portraying a more complex and mature scenario like this, because it does so in a way that portrays it in the correct light
