☼ –––––––– ᴀᴍᴏɴɢ ᴛʜᴇ ғᴀᴅɪɴɢ ғʟᴏᴡᴇʀs –––––––– ☼ King Link wandered through the waving grasses of Hyrule Field. A crisp breeze sent the golden stalks swaying to and fro, and Link breathed deeply. Only when he was alone in nature was he truly at peace. The hustle and bustle of the castle faded into the distance as Link closed his eyes and felt the cool wind against his forehead, stirring his golden locks of hair. As Link stood, still and silent in the grass, unmovable and firm as an ancient oak tree, a rustling could be heard not far away. Link opened one brilliant blue eye and caught a glimpse of movement - a mere flash of brown fur deep within the grass. His hand wandered upward until he grasped the smooth wood of his bow. Drawing it from its place strapped securely to his muscular back, he selected an arrow from the quiver on his hip and raised the bow to his cheek. He saw it again - just a glimpse, but it was definitely there. Definitely prey to be caught. A catch to be made. His kingly duties held much significance in his life, but nothing was more important to Link than hunting. In his days of exploring and living off the land, before he had rescued Zelda and become the king, hunting had been a crucial daily practice in order to survive. He had become quite skilled and could shoot a fox, bird, or rabbit from a great distance. Link aimed, and when he located the source of the rustling, he fired his arrow. There was a squeal, and seconds later, a rabbit burst from the grasses and sprinted away. He'd missed, but the thrill of the hunt brought a smile to his face nonetheless. He collected the arrow - another thing his days in the wilderness had taught him - and replaced his bow. There was still time for a walk before the sun sank below the horizon and cast Hyrule Field into darkness. The first colors of the sunset illuminated the cloudless sky above - flaming orange, pastel yellow, and vivid purple. Link gazed upward and admired the colorful display as he walked onward, the brittle grass swishing around his ankles. The grass has lost its vibrant green color when the first frost had gripped Hyrule just two nights ago. The field was now a soft gold, and Link knew it would be no time at all before the grass withered and died, only to flourish again when the snow melted and spring arrived. Before long, Link stepped into a circular meadow. The meadow was carpeted with flowers - pink, blue, yellow, and red petals shone golden in the light of the setting sun. Link sank to his knees among the flowers. A closer look revealed them to be wilting, their tender green leaves shriveling away from the cold. He touched a slender finger to one of the flowers; its petals broke free and drifted to the ground. The meadow was remarkably small, shrouded by the tall golden grasses surrounding it on all sides. Link glanced around, a frown tugging on his lips; he was uncertain if he had explored this area of Hyrule Field before. Surely he had; the king of Hyrule had seen every inch of his kingdom during his travels. Perhaps the change in the seasons had simply made the area unrecognizable. There was something haunting about the soft grass sprinkled with the fading colors of the flowers. The crisp wind continued to blow, ruffling Link's blonde hair and tossing it over his forehead and in front of his eyes. With a sweep of his hand, he tamed it again, then returned to his examination of the field. The sun sank ever lower, and the shadows around Link lengthened and darkened. The king turned to look behind him, yet another habit he had developed during his adventures, and was surprised to see gray clouds, heavy with rain, gathering on the horizon. A storm was brewing in the distance. It would be wise to return to the castle, lest Zelda worry he was caught in the rain... Link turned his face toward the sunset, the soft golden light shining in his bright blue eyes. His blonde hair glowed in the light, and he smiled. A walk in the field was truly all he needed to shed the burden of being king, if only for a little while, and return to the adventurous man he had once been. He missed his days of travel, but his family and his kingdom were his first priority, now and forevermore. It was time to return. Time to walk back to the castle, shoulder his responsibility, and carry it with the strength and dignity of a king. Link rose from his crouching position among the fading flowers. He turned toward the storm and saw, silhouetted against the dark clouds, the looming walls of Hyrule Castle rising from the field to greet him. He began to walk, slowly at first, and then broke into a run. Into the storm. Toward the castle. Away from the fading flowers. –––––––––––––––– ☼ ᴄʀᴇᴅɪᴛs –––––––––––––––– » story by @King_Rauru » roleplay organized by @Aija-of-Hyrule » art found on the internet
