It makes him feel that he's in control of someone's life, at least. When he was young, his family's bank failed, leaving his previously reasonably well-off family with considerably less money. Just as he was getting used to living in a teeny apartment in a not-so-great neighborhood and having only two meals a day and walking to his new public school, his father was involved in an embezzlement scandal and put in prison. This shook up his life even more-people at school were variously unusually sympathetic or distrustful, and his mother had to take on another job, so their relationship became pretty strained. Theo is pretty adaptable-he has to be-but that doesn't mean that he enjoys it. He really just wishes that he could have a life that doesn't change and in which he doesn't have to do new things and meet new people. Whenever he feels stressed or like his life is out of his control, he goes up to a hill in a nearby park at night with a candle and his notebook and writes. Sometimes he writes his own stories, sometimes he writes endless versions of how his life could have turned out differently. He can do this for hours; it's the only time that he feels he's in control of anything.
