My Reaction to: Mega Man 11

Game Introduction

In conclusion, Mega Man 11 is a wonderful entry for a wonderful series. It gives me a very high amount of hope for the future, as well as getting me excited for the next of the Blue Bomber's adventure!

How To Play

30 years ago, Capcom, a company best known for releasing arcade games, wanted to try their hand at making a game for the home consoles, more specifically the NES. So they hired an aspiring artist named Keiji Inafune and a team of developers to create an action platformer. With that, Inafune and his team created a game known as "Mega Man" (or "Rock Man" in Japan). It was a game about a little, blue robot named Mega Man who would fight other evil robots, steal their powers, and use them to defeat the evil Dr. Wily. While the first Mega Man game wasn't as successful as Capcom had hoped, they still gave Inafune's team to thumbs up to create a sequel. Mega Man 2 helped put Mega Man on the map. It had a better look, feel, sound, and upped the boss count from six to eight. And then they made a third one, and it was really good! Then after three more games, they made a spinoff series called "Mega Man X." This upgraded the Mega Man formula a ton by adding upgrades to your health and armor, not to mention it was for the next gen SNES. From then on, Capcom just kept making more Mega Man games. They added more games to the classic series and X series, and even creating other spinoff series like Mega Man Battle Network, Starforce, Legends, and Zero. But just when it seemed like Mega Man wasn't going away, Keiji Inafune, the "father" of Mega Man, left Capcom to create his own company. From then on, Mega Man was no where to be found. Every game that was in production at the time was cancelled, and outside of an appearance in Super Smash Bros. and a few legacy collections, he wasn't anywhere to be seen. But just when it seemed that the series was dead, Capcom did a livestream for december 2017, Mega Man's 30th anniversary. In that livestream they announced what everyone was wishing for for eight years: Mega Man 11, a brand new game. Everyone's favorite blue bomber was back! Now Mega Man 11 has just released, and what do I think of it? It is a fantastic game! First, let's take a look at the story. The story is pretty much the same as every other Mega Man game, so spoilers for every Mega Man game ever made. Good Dr. Light builds good robot Mega Man. He has a sister named Roll and brother named Proto Man. Bad Dr. Wily has bad Robot Masters. Mega Man must defeat robot masters, steal their powers, and use them to defeat Dr. Wily. This time, however, Dr. Wily has a new trick up his sleeve: the double gear system, a device Dr. Wily created when he was in university that allows robots to push past their limits Ultra Instinct style. Dr. Light also has a prototype of the system, so he installs it in Mega Man to give him a fighting chance against the powered up robot masters. One thing I really liked about the story in this game (spoilers) is that they actually show what happened between Light and Wily before the events of the first Mega Man. No other game had done this, instead it was always just "Dr. Light built Mega Man and Dr. Wily grew jealous of his success so he decided to take over the world." We never actually got to see what actually happened (except for stuff like the tv shows and comics). Next the gameplay. As far as gameplay goes, it's just like every other Mega Man game; you jump, shoot, slide, and charge shot your way through enemies and obstacles. This time, however, Mega Man has the previously mentioned double gear system. There are two gears that Mega Man can activate: the speed gear and the power gear. With the speed gear, Mega Man can slow down time, allowing him to dodge obstacles and attacks easier. The power gear gives Mega Man a strength increase, as well as giving him a double charge shot, or if he has a special weapon, he can power that up. The gears, however, can run out, and when that happens, Mega Man will not be able to use them until they recharge. When Mega Man is really low on health, he can activate both gears at once, and he can also use a more powerful charge attack. The catch is, this mode can't be turned off, and when it runs out, Mega Man will be severely damaged, and his buster will shoot slower and can't charge. Mega Man can also collect bolts to spend at a shop, giving him stuff like one ups, e-tanks, weapon tanks, and upgrades such as auto-charge, energy balancer, and shock absorber. This game also retains the same amount of difficulty that every other Mega Man game is known for. As far as design and sound goes, Mega Man 11 also does a good job. Mega Man 11 now has a 3D look to it. The last few games, 9 and 10, went back to an 8 bit look, and to be honest, I'm glad they decided to give Mega Man 11 an updated look. Nothing against the 8 bit look, but for something as big as the 30th anniversary, it's nice to see Mega Man going for a more modern look, while also keeping that cartoony feel. Sound wise, Mega Man is known for having great music, and this game is no different. This time, the music is a more techno-theme to it, something very welcomed in this game about a futuristic world.
