» Portrait Tutorial/Process « by geijutsu !! this is not me why do people keep thinking this ;; !! Not sure how helpful this will be but I hope you gain something from it! PRESS ARROW KEYS TO SEE STEPS also there are random black dots for some reason xD . . . This was made in procreate, using only default brushes! List of brushes I used -> Flat brush (regular or a modified version where there's more pressure) Airbrush, Flowing Hair brush, and a nikko rull brush . . . The portrait isn't super color accurate as I didn't reference the colors off the original, so I made it more warm/pink rather than the original colder colors! . . . Time it took to make the piece - 2 hours and 15 minutes (did most of it late at night xD) I tried a new technique which was much easier and fun! . . . First, I chose a reference (I find all of my references on pinterest) Step 1- Basic sketch with pink using a flat brush (with minor tweaking so it had more pressure) Step 2- Sketched in more detail, getting a lot of the details and basic shading for sheeks and nose, and basic shading for hair. Step 3 - Underneath the sketch, I did basic coloring (eye, cheeks, lip color, some highlights) This took less than 5 minutes Step 4 - I then combine the two layers, and using a basic round smudge tool, I blended the sketch with the colors underneath. Using a sketch color that matches the piece is recommended! in this step, I started the nose (kinda on accident) I added the nostrils, some shading and highlights. The brushes I used for this were a flat brush (slightly modified but same texture and shape) and an airbrush Step 5 - Using a flat brush or airbrush, I added details like eyebrows, eyeliner, pupils, lips, etc. To make a portrait look more lively, add a greenish undertone near the chin and more blue on the forehead (not a lot, it's almost unnoticeable) Done put detail everywhere, the places where you should put the most detail is the eyes. I didn't do a lot on the teeth (can't draw teeth well and it would get distracting if I did) I use the liquify tool a lot to modify parts that look weird or are not in the right position Step 6 - This is where I do the hair. I'm really bad at hair, but I managed xD I went over it with the highlight color, then slowly worked with a darker brush to get the shape of the hair flow down. I then used a hairbrush from procreate to get the strands which improved it A LOT. The hair could be better, but I tried. I also added the shirt and jacket which took a couple of minutes. I worked on the ear, but as it's not a main detail, I don't suggest overworking it. Step 7 - in this step, I added some final touches.I added some darker colors on the neck, lightened up the lips, and added some highlights. Volume is very important when it comes to portraits, so make sure to keep going, portraits are almost never done, you can always keep working until you're satisfied. I could of kept going, but I felt like it was mostly done. Step 8 - This last step is very minor, but I put it in clip studio paint (procreate would work too) and did minor tone corrections (adding contrast and saturation) This is very important, as it could improve the piece even if it's minor. LAST SLIDE IS REFERENCE THUMBNAIL - I put my art in CLIP STUDIO PAINT and add a strong sharp effect to it :) ... Ta dah! It's done! I know it was a little braud and not too in detail, but if you want a step by step of part of it (like how to shade a nose or an eye) let me know! I hope this motivated/inspired anyone to try portraits in procreate as the program can seem difficult at first! Mini-lesson - Don't worry how realistic or accurate your pieces are, especially when using a reference! I think it's much more important to make art fun to you, interesting, and have some emotion in it! Some great examples of this would be @/kildren or @/yizhengke1988 on ig. As long as art makes you happy just do it :D Art by Me Program - Procreate done on an ipad pro with apple pencil #art
