Space, arrows, and click to zoom … Decided to make a new greyscale project for my greyscale studies! I used references for all of these! I didn’t use any color in any of these studies throughout the process, I did so to improve my values and conveying volume through such values :3 … I highly suggest trying some greyscale studies, or at least studies without color (so regular pencil on toned paper and such) to improve upon your values and form, without having to rely on colors to create distinction/shape … Studies are when you draw based off a photo or some reference to gain experience and improve on your skills or practice! That’s what this project is, my greyscale portrait studies :3 … I used PROCREATE on iPad for all of these … Go inside the project to see some of the process images of a couple of the studies (5, 25, 30) … Regarding brushes, 7 of the studies were done using a simple flat brush, and the rest were a variety, mostly picked at random xD if you’d like more info about a specific brush used, click B and a graphic will show, thought it’s not super accurate, or ask me … I’m not happy with all of these studies, there’s some things needing improvement, but these studies do go back a couple months. … I’ll try to update this project if I do more greyscale studies (I also must admit that I left out a couple studies that didn’t go well or were unfinished) The first study is from december 10th … I’d love to critique any art, specifically studies or something more on the realism side, so link that below if you’re interested in me doing that! … I was inspired by some of my favorite artists like Yizheng Ke, Wangjie Li, Huaishen J, Jie Gaoart etc. … I won’t link the references here because there’s a lot, but ask and I’ll provide with links! I’ll also add some commentary below :3 these are my opinions no need to argue xD 1 - painterly study which was fun (< 1 hour) 2 - ear xD (20 min) 3 - similar to 1, this was actually my second attempt at a study with this reference, I quite like the outcome (1 hour) 4 - don’t like this one as much, not terrible but could be better, something is off about it (1 hour) 5 - more painterly, pleased with the outcome (1 hour) 6 - used values farther from white, so the darkest is grey, so range of values is fun to experiment with (< 1 hour) 7 - not quite pleased w/ it but compared to the previous attempts using this reference, it’s better (< 1 hour) 8 - not happy with this one either, though it’s not bad, just off 9 - it’s nice, but I could probably do better now (1 hour) 10 - more painterly and I don’t like it very much, I’d like to redo it someday (40 min) 11 - smoother style, still happy enough with this one 1 hour) 12 - Proud of this one, was inspired by Yizheng Ke (2 hours) 13 - Same technique as 12, still like it (1 hour) 14 - Not as happy with this one, struggles a bit xD (1 hour) 15 - Not super proud of this one but it’s got some things going for it value wise (50 min) 16 - quick study with flat brush (30 min) 17 - originally just used a single color, then turned it to grey, but I included it anyways (20 min) 18 - Group of mini studies similar to 17 (30 min) 19 - Left it unfinished, so it’s not great but still not bad (25 min) 20 - Same default round brush as 19, more boring but not bad (30 min) 21 - used more textures, the values could be better, I feel pretty neutral about it (1 hour) 22 - Used a fun pencil brush, used a yuzuru hanyu reference xD (30 min) 23 - yuzuru hanyu study (1 hour) 24 - rough study, not polished but I like it (1 hour) 25 - Feel neutral about this one, the anatomy is pretty good (1 hour) 26 - Quick study using a default round brush (25 min) 27 - Casual study (40 min) 28 - More small sketch studies (50 min) 29 - Feel neutral, used a round brush and some mild texture (1 hour) 30 - Fun study using some textures, go inside the project to see the brushes I used (1 hour) … All art by me @geijutsu/@jeila References found on Pinterest, comment for links to references Song - Linger Longer by Cosmo Sheldrake <3 #art
