"taller" (cheating)
Game Introduction
just as a little treat, here's a short story with my babies ;) <3 -------------------------------- "so i had an idea-" "no." ben scrunched up his nose at the immediate rebuff, but honestly had been expecting as much. "you don't even know what i was going to say." rahim hardly kept from rolling his eyes, turning to resume his routine walk through the woods. ben scrambled after him to keep up. "i don't need to know what you were going to say, i know /you/," the veteran countered, his mild accent rolling softly over his words. "knowing you, it will likely end up with something on fire, or someone needing to take an emergency trip to the medic, or some other mess for the rest of us to clean up." ben scoffed. "that's an unfair accusation." in front of him, rahim stopped and turned around, the critical arch of an eyebrow saying more than words could. ben huffed, his shoulders slumping. apparently satisfied that he had shut this operation down, the older man spun back on his heel to continue down the trail. but ben was not so easily deterred. he hustled back up to keep up with the man, not willing to settle without a challenge. rahim was never one for not noticing such changes in his surroundings, and had scrutinized ben out of the side of his eye but said nothing, so ben took it as an indicator as his turn to speak. "listen, anaiyah wanted-" rahim's eye flicked back over to him at the beginning of his speech, it having caught his attention. the man had a soft spot for the kid; they all did. ben cleared his throat and continued. "listen, anaiyah wanted to see what fireworks are like. i told her about how i used to watch them as a kid, and you should have just /seen/ her, she was absolutely /mesmerized/- she keeps asking me a whole bunch of questions about them now, and y'know, i just want to give her the experience so she can know it for herself." rahim raised an eyebrow at the end of his spiel, silently prompting him to proceed with his proposal. ben shifted slightly as he still walked by the man's side. "...listen, i know you keep gunpowder, and i was thinking we could find some nice cardboard shells-- i already know how to make them. sorta." rahim snorted. "just as i thought. a horrible idea." "hey!" ben protested. "i'll have you know i put a lot of thought into making this plan /not/ horrible-" "you will burn the whole forest down," rahim interrupted with a shake of his head. "a horrible idea." ben's face pulled into a pout as he halted his pace for a moment, before bustling back up to fall in line with the older man once more. "i'll make sure it's all completely safe, i promise!" he avowed. "come on. what's so horrible about making one of anaiyah's dreams come true?" at that, rahim faltered, his head twitching to face him and his mouth parted with words not yet formulated. ben felt his brown eyes scrutinize him, could practically see the man judging the situation and weighing the variables. after a moment rahim closed his mouth and puffed out of his nose in reluctant resignation, and ben knew then that he had got him. the man shook his head again as he resumed his walk, puffing out his cheeks. "i am not going to be responsible for this. i want the record to show that i said it was a horrible idea." ben's cheeks lifted in a puckish grin. "anaiyah is gonna be so happy, just you wait." rahim puffed out another miffed breath. "i know she will. and you better remember your promise." "of course." ~ ~ as it turned out, rahim /did/ know ben. maybe a little too well. ben's little escapade resulted with something on fire, /and/ someone needing to take an emergency trip to the medic, /and/ a rather large mess for the rest to clean up. at least the incident allowed anaiyah to witness fireworks (or at least explosions resembling them) for herself, and gave the rest of the colony valid reason to put a lifetime ban on gunpowder and other explosive materials on ben. so, all's well that ends well. (well, as soon as that part of the forest where rahim likes to take his daily walks grows back.) -------------------------------- i wrote this at 12am. 724 words. i have no regrets.
How To Play
hey !! here's my bird people !! whom i love so much <3 i know y'all have seen a lot with ben recently, but i do actually have two other main ones so far whom i love equally as much and i'm actually getting to flesh out who they are a little bit more so there's ben, then the little girl is anaiyah, and the tol boi is rahim. ben (20), i've realized, is basically my brother as far as personality goes. he's chill, snarky, usually seeming indifferent but has a soft spot, is very intelligent and yet very gifted at coming up with horrible ideas. he has basically lowkey adopted anaiyah, but everyone just collectively decides not to mention it. anaiyah (8) is just a little ray of sunshine. she's real bubbly and outgoing and friendly, but also a tough little trooper who will get back up every single time she falls. she's got that childlike innocence (since she is a child lol) but she still knows how to be sensitive. her wings are underdeveloped so she can't really fly (yet, at least) though ben is doing what he can to fix that. in the meantime, he takes her on flights himself, a lot. rahim (37) is much different. he's a veteran of war and has always been quiet by nature, that certain trait being amplified by what he's gone through. he has a whole lot of scars that he does his best to keep covered, and he's really sensitive about them. just looking at him, he's a very intimidating man, being 6'1 and well-muscled and heavily scarred and silent and watchful. however, he's quite the opposite-- a very sensitive and kind-hearted man with a definite soft spot (his name means kind and merciful). he's very silent and observant and well-learned, often offering quiet wisdom and guidance. however, he will not hesitate to point out and shut down a horribly bad idea (*looks at ben*). i love these three so much, probably the only characters i have more developed than them are zero and reggae (who i'm too cowardly to do much with :') ) anyway here's a little doodle in which flying over someone to be taller than them is cheating (kinda is tho) (not that rahim is gonna say anything) lol i bet you can guess whose outfit i actually put thought into- anyway here's a brief process 1- sketch, ofc 2- second sketch, so i actually know what i'm doing 3- got rid of the first sketch so you can just see the second 4- lineart (ughghgh why do the first three steps always take s o long- i'm pretty sure i'd been working about two hours by the time i finished the lineart qwq) 5- silhouette test (pretty much the first time i've done this) to check readability. i'm pretty happy with how it turned out 6- base colors 7- colored the wings and added the speech bubble and finished! the music and zoom coding aren't mine, but everything else is !!
