Full credit for the shadow engine goes to @banbot2, I just modified it a little for this scene. I've been sitting on this for like 2 years and it seemed a little too cool to go to waste. Better to post something unfinished than to never post it at all. Working with this many layers and pieces is really tedious unfortunately, with every small change to the layout requiring the shadows, ambient occlusion etc to be manually rebuilt.
